Kanglade Sahiwal Stud The case of the Kanglade Sahiwal Stud at Bli Bli on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, is a good example of the fact that Sahiwals are suitable cattle for small portions of land. The stud, belonging to Carmel Evans, is located on just 1.6ha and this small area is sufficient for a small stud operation. The property is just ten km from the coast and receives a generous tropical rainfall. Carmel tells, "I spent a large amount of time researching the best cattle for this property and came up with the Sahiwals. We are in a major tick area and the 100% Bos Indicus characteristic of the Sahiwals was a big thing in their favour. This meant that they should be totally tick resistant and my experience since buying them has proven this to be so. I never have to do any spraying for ticks. "Bearing in mind the size of the property, their excellent fodder utilization efficiency was another big factor in their selection. The ease of birth has also been a big factor in my selection - calves are incredibly small but grow rapidly. One of the keys to effectively managing cattle on a small block is the use of rotation grazing. Using electric fences I have divided the property into four smaller paddocks and control where and when the cattle graze. My current herd is six and this is an ideal matching of herd size with the size of the block. I do have to watch my herd numbers. "For me, the opportunity to own a small cattle stud has been a long held dream. I grew up on the Mt Holly AIS stud at Ramsay on the Darling Downs where my father was the owner. Then I went nursing for 46 years but never forgot the pleasure of working with cattle. "When planning for retirement I had the attitude that I wanted to retire from nursing - not from life. The breed's calm temperament and high intelligence was also a factor for me because I want to be able to run these cattle for many years into my retirement. The Sahiwal cattle have been the critical element in my retirement from nursing and I am so happy I made the choice. I am now into my third year of showing and have achieved success in this endeavour. "I'd certainly encourage anyone who faces a similar set of circumstances to my own to consider the Sahiwal breed. I don't think they can go wrong", says Carmel. |
